Life at Khamu Lodge
We share our environment with the local people who are of the Khamu ethnic minority. They share their traditional methods of farming, weaving, fishing and even panning for gold! Guests at Khamu Lodge are able to fully participate in rural life alongside the Khamu people, giving a unique insight into the lives of these extraordinary people. Whether trekking to a remote waterfall, learning about medicinal plants in the jungle, planting rice alongside villagers in a paddy field or watching life on the river, all of our guests find a stay at Khamu Lodge educational and inspirational.
Our 20 safari tents are purpose built and feature solar-powered electricity. Each has a private balcony overlooking the river and is simply but comfortably furnished with bamboo and rattan furniture. Each tent has twin beds with a comfortable duvet and mosquito net. Like all the structures at Khamu Lodge, the tents and attached stone bathrooms are designed to blend perfectly with the surrounding environment and scenery.
More Background on Laos and the Kamu Lodge
Since opening up to tourism in 1989, Laos has developed something of a cult status amongst travelers who are naturally in awe of the country’s spellbinding scenery and friendly inhabitants. Presenting seemingly endless opportunities to pursue adventure in a sustainable manner, Lao PDR has established it self as a leader in ecotourism tourism within the region. Lending to the personality of the destination and seeking to reveal its true character, ecotourism encompasses everything from sustainable stays to immersive encounters, to hands on experiences. Essentially, ecotourism strives to be low impact with an educational twist, directly benefiting and empowering local communities while simultaneously rewarding travelers with eye-opening and rewarding experiences. Taking these values to heart, Kamu Lodge embodies the ‘eco philosophy’ at every turn. Immersing guests in a truly authentic sustainable tourism experience; here at Kamu we are defining a new type of low-key luxury where experience is everything. We invite guests not just to observe but to participate in local culture. Under the expert and often humorous eye of the Kamu ethnic group, guests have the opportunity to partake in activities including rice farming, weaving, traditional fishing and the popular pursuit of panning for gold in the Mekong River!
