Itinerary
DAY 01 Half-day knife making with master Blacksmith
Meet at our office and embark on a short yet enchanting journey, a mere 10-minute ride that transports you to the very edge of a local village nestled alongside the serene Nam Khan River.
You'll be greeted by your local English-speaking facilitator. Your journey into the heart of craftsmanship begins with an introduction to the Master Blacksmith (in his 60's). Imagine, standing before a living legend, whose hands have sculpted metal into knives for decades, and his father before him. Of the 100 families in the village, 80 of them used to make knives for sale to markets and other provinces.
Here, the anvil becomes your canvas, and molten metal your medium. You'll have the chance to channel your creativity and craftsmanship, forging a blade that bears the essence of your vision. Feel free to choose your path – perhaps follow a suggested design, or let your imagination lead, backed by pictures you've brought along, ready to spring to life under the Master's skillful guidance.
But this experience is more than crafting; it's a passage into the tapestry of local life. Immerse yourself in the rhythm of the village. You'll catch glimpses of everyday life. Discover the enchantment of a local Lao family's existence. Engage, ask questions, and share stories; build bridges that span continents and cultures.
So, come, seize this unique opportunity not just to craft a knife, but to carve a memory. Instruction and everything needed to make your knife is included.
The total time to make a knife is about 2-3 hours for 2-3 people. BYO water and sunglasses (for protection). There is a convenience store next door for snacks and drinks. Master Blacksmith will be handling the dangerous parts of the process, and anything that you do not feel comfortable doing the master blacksmith will assist you.
Visiting slots are 9 am, 12.30 pm and 2 pm. Not available on Buddhist days or weekends. (see calendar for days marked with Yellow symbol).
Max group 6 people. Note: if you are taking the train in Laos, knives cannot be taken.
