DAY 01 A Morning Above the Clouds

Your day begins early in the morning, leaving the peaceful streets of Luang Prabang behind for a scenic 50-minute (29 km) drive north toward the Pak Ou District. Watching the countryside wake up as we drive sets the perfect tone for a morning of exploration.

Upon arriving at the water's edge, we board a local long-tail boat. This brief but beautiful crossing of the Nam Ou River delivers us directly to the base of the mountain and the start of our trailhead.

The hike immediately engages you with a steady 3km ascent. Depending on our pace, the round-trip journey up and down the mountain will take between 2 to 3 hours. The climb gets the heart pumping, but the prize at the top is more than worth the effort.

Emerging at the Pha An Viewpoint, you are rewarded with unparalleled, 360-degree scenery. From this lofty vantage point, the landscape of Laos opens up below you. You will have plenty of time to catch your breath, relax, and photograph the panoramic views of the surrounding jagged mountain peaks, the dramatic limestone faces guarding the famous Pak Ou Caves, and the beautiful, swirling confluence of the Mekong and Nam Ou rivers.

After taking in the magnificent vistas, we make our way back down the trail and cross the river once more. On the return drive to Luang Prabang, we make a quick, fascinating stop at the local Whiskey Village (Ban Xang Hai). Here, you can glimpse traditional Lao village life and see how local rice whiskey is crafted before we arrive back in the city around 12:00 PM, leaving your afternoon completely free.
