Daily Itinerary

1. Day Chiang Rai to Chiang Khong

Your northern adventure begins with a warm welcome at the Chiang Rai airport. From here, you will be driven through the shifting landscapes of northern Thailand toward the border town of Chiang Khong. Settle in for the evening, feeling the quiet anticipation of the journey ahead as you rest near the banks of the mighty Mekong River.

2. Day Chiang Khong – Houay Xay – Luang Namtha (B)

After breakfast, your driver will transfer you to the border bridge. Step across the threshold into Laos, where your guide will be waiting to greet you after immigration in Houay Xay. Our route today takes us along a newly carved road through undulating hills, vibrant rice paddies, and patchwork cultivation areas. Along the way, we will stop to visit local Lanten villages, getting our first glimpse of the rich tapestry of ethnic cultures in northern Laos.

3. Day Luang Namtha – Nam Ha NPA Jungle Camp (B/L/D)

The call of the wild begins. At 9:00 AM, we board a local tuk-tuk to the trailhead near Tha Sae village, pausing briefly at a bustling morning market to gather fresh provisions. As we step onto the trail, the modern world melts away, replaced by the lush, towering canopy of the tropical rainforest.

We hike for a few hours over shaded ridges and down into deep valleys. By midday, we pause in a pristine clearing for a well-deserved Lao picnic, expertly prepared by our guides using local ingredients. The afternoon pushes us deeper into impressive primary forest, weaving through ancient mahogany giants, whispering bamboo groves, and wild banana plants. Upon finding the perfect clearing, our guides will teach you the art of jungle survival—demonstrating how to forage for materials and construct a traditional shelter. As dusk falls, relax by the crackling campfire, savor a wilderness dinner, and drift to sleep to the enchanting symphony of the jungle.

4. Day Trekking in Nam Ha NPA & Khmu Homestay (B/L/D)

Wake to the gentle chorus of tropical birds and the crisp morning air. After a hearty breakfast prepared over the fire, we break camp around 10:00 AM. Today’s trek is deeply rewarding, taking us across densely forested hills and plunging into vibrantly green valleys.

Lunch today is an interactive experience: Jungle-Style! You will learn to harvest nature's bounty, observing and assisting as your guides cook a meal using authentic indigenous techniques and bamboo vessels. Refueled, we press on through vibrant, ancient woodlands before beginning a steady, sweeping descent. Breathtaking panoramas of the Nam Ha valleys unfold before us as we make our way down to the picturesque, timeless village of Nalan by mid-afternoon. Tonight, you are a guest of the community. Meet the locals, learn about their daily rhythms, and share a traditional Lao dinner in your Khmu homestay.

5. Day Nam Ha NPA Trek – Return to Luang Namtha (B/L)

Awaken to the ambient sounds of village life. Following a delicious, authentic breakfast, we set out around 10:00 AM. The morning offers a tranquil 2 to 3-hour hike tracing the scenic banks of the Nam Ha River. We pass beneath the shadows of giant trees and meander through bamboo fields, eventually reaching the cultivated lands of Namkoy village, where we stop to meet the Lanten people and enjoy a savory Lao picnic.

The afternoon calls for a return to the jungle. For the next 3 to 4 hours, we navigate untouched primary forest teeming with vibrant flora and fauna. The trail gradually rises before launching into a steep 300-meter ascent. Your effort is rewarded with sweeping, panoramic views over the vast Nam Ha protected area. From this high vantage point, we descend sharply through the trees, emerging at the village of Namlue in the late afternoon. A 45-minute tuk-tuk ride brings us back to civilization.

• Trekking: 6-7 hours, medium difficulty

Alternative: Change your hiking boots for paddles and kayak down the Nam Tha River. Get your heart pumping when navigating white water rapids while green walls of pristine jungle cover the riverbanks to either side. Enjoy lunch next to a timid pool inviting you for a quick swim, spot colorful kingfishers sweeping across the water and visit small villages along the shore.

6. Day Luang Namtha – Luang Prabang by High-Speed Train (B)

Bid farewell to the far north as we transfer to the Nateuy railway station. We board the train for a scenic and swift journey south to the royal city of Luang Prabang. Upon arrival, you will be met at the station and transferred to your hotel. Depending on our arrival time, you may have the opportunity to take your first stroll through the enchanting streets of the UNESCO World Heritage city.

7. Day Luang Prabang World Heritage City Tour (B)

Today is dedicated to the spiritual and historical heart of Laos. Luang Prabang, the former royal capital, is a living museum of breathtaking temples, colonial architecture, and quiet monastic life. We will explore the city's most revered sights, tracing the lineage of Lao kingdoms and the deep roots of local Buddhism. We will ascend the steps of Mount Phousi to take in magnificent, sweeping views of the Mekong River, the terracotta rooftops, and the surrounding misty mountains.

Note: This city tour is highly flexible and can alternatively be done by bicycle for those wanting a breeze as they explore.

8. Day Luang Prabang – At Your Leisure (B)

A day entirely at your leisure. Wander the morning markets, sip robust Lao coffee in a riverside café, go for a traditional Lao massage, enjoy a Yoga lesson to strech your muscles or simply relax and soak in the tranquil atmosphere of the city before our next trekking adventure begins.

9. Day FairTrek: Tad Thong to Ban Houay Thao (B/L/D)

Prepare for a demanding but spectacular journey into the wild mountains surrounding Luang Prabang. A short 15-minute transfer brings us to the base of the Tad Thong waterfall. We step onto a historic jungle lifeline—a path heavily trodden by locals transporting fresh produce to valley markets. We climb alongside the water's edge to its source at Ban Houay Thong, a unique plateau community where Hmong and Khmu families live side by side.

From here, we ascend further to Mock Mhoo, a hauntingly beautiful "ghost village" abandoned over 40 years ago. Though reclaimed by nature, the land still whispers the stories of its past. After lunch, the trail grows wilder. We tackle a rugged mountain range, enveloped by a dense canopy of protected rainforest. Gaps in the trees offer hard-earned, dizzying views of the valleys below. By evening, we descend to a remote farmstay. Enjoy a home-cooked Khmu dinner and watch the sun dip behind the peaks.

Accommodation note: Amenities are delightfully simple. Expect a Western-style toilet, a refreshing bucket shower, solar lighting, and a thin mattress beneath a mosquito net. No phone charging is available—a true off-grid experience.

10. Day FairTrek: Ban Houay Thao to Ban Nong Khuay (B/L/D)

Wake to the crisp mountain air and a hearty breakfast. Before hitting the trail, spend time connecting with your hosts, gaining a deeper understanding of Khmu culture and daily life.

Today's trek leads us through a world of emerald greenery and golden mountain rice fileds. We climb rolling hills and follow a mountain range on its flank while enjoying a glimps into local Khmu life of the farming communities along our way. After arriving in Ban Nong Khuay, nesteled beautifully between the mountains, and settling into our homestay, we listen to the storys told by the village elders.

11. Day FairTrek: Ban Nong Khuay to Ban Long Lao Mai (B/L/D)

Share breakfast with your hosts in Nong Khuay, beautifully translated as "Buffalo Lake." (If traveling during the rainy season between July and December, you have the option to hike to this famous seasonal lake). Our path today weaves through stunning, untouched nature toward the Hmong village of Long Lao Mai. It is a short yet beautifully taxing four-hour hike, broken up by a peaceful lunch break amid the wilderness. Upon arrival in Long Lao Mai, your guide will introduce you to your new host family. Take a walking tour of the village and meet your neighbors, many of whom are subsistence farmers who create beautiful handmade bracelets and crafts to supplement their income—perfect, meaningful souvenirs that directly support the community. Share a warm evening meal with the villagers and rest your trekking legs.

12. Day FairTrek: Ban Long Lao Mai to Kuang Si Waterfall (B/L)

The final leg of our trek takes us through the quintessential mountainous countryside of Luang Prabang. We pass vibrant orchards, terraced rice fields, and vegetable gardens before ascending back into wild, forested mountains with a few steep, invigorating climbs.

By afternoon, the jungle opens up to reveal the crown jewel of the region: the crystal-clear Kuang Si Waterfall. We follow the water from the spring to the falls. Your reward for days of hiking is here—dive into the inviting, tiered turquoise pools and let the cool water wash away the trail dust.

While in the park, we will visit the Free the Bears Visitor Center to learn about their protection program for Asian sun and moon bears. In the late afternoon, we begin our journey back to Luang Prabang by vehicle (or optionally by boat), making a final stop at a small, community-built Hmong museum to further appreciate the local culture.

13. Day Luang Prabang – Departure (B)

Enjoy one last Lao breakfast and soak in the serene morning atmosphere of Luang Prabang. When the time comes, you will be transferred to the airport for your onward journey, carrying with you the indelible memories of untamed jungles, ancient trails, and the warmth of the Lao people.
